Columbus Indiana Photography Class: Stacy Able Photography

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Last Monday I had the pleasure of teaching a basic photography class at the Columbus, Indiana Library. There were around 30 people in attendance all with various cameras. I went over the basics of photography and was careful not to go into the dark depths of aperture and shutter numbers. Following my brief power point presentation we went to the courtyard to take some photos and give people the opportunity to ask questions. There were so many great questions and hobbiest photographers there. It felt so great to see the joy I have in taking photos in other people. There was this adorable 12 year old girl who asked me some questions and showed me some of her photos. She has such a great eye! Several people stayed an hour past the end of the talk and kept firing away questions. I left around 8:45 pm (the talk started at 7pm) with a huge smile on my face. It was so nice to share a tiny bit of my photography knowledge with others to help improve their snap shots.

Here is the flier that was posted at the front door… the photos are of Kai, one of my barbet babies from January and Miles an adorable 3 year old boy who dressed up as a petite chef.

Columbus Indiana Photographer: Business Head shots

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

A couple weeks ago I worked with the lovely Toni in Columbus, Indiana. Our session’s focus was business headshots along with some dramatic business concept pieces. Toni was fantastic to work with. Her skin glowed both indoors and outdoors. Walking through wheat fields, to holding her gorgeous smile, She was up for anything and made this session a breeze on that hot summer day.

Columbus Indiana Family Photography::: Nina’s Family

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Early this summer I had the pleasure of catching up with one of my fellow photographers and friends, Nina Shannon. Nina shoots mostly children in Tennessee and she does a beautiful job at capturing the joy of children. She and I wanted to catch up and shoot together before summer got in full swing, so we met up at her mom’s house for a couple days of hanging out and taking photos. We watched tutorials on edgy lighting techniques then went outside and practiced them. While there, Nina, always behind the camera, asked if I could take some photos of her and her gorgeous daughter Annie. Of course I said yes and captured some cute mom and daughter moments. In addition to those shots, I captured Annie with her grandparents. Being that my grandparents are so special and close with me, I know how special those photos will be in years to come.

Columbus Indiana Photography: Sisters in Mill Race Park

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

I met up with Allyson, Holly, and their husbands at Mill Race Park in Columbus, Indiana to shoot some portraits of them together and with their spouses. They both hadn’t had any photos done of them together since their weddings.

Both Allyson and Holly were a breeze to work with. We started with the standard portrait then moved to variations as that is my specialty. Colorful umbrellas, jumping, vintage couches, and a covered barn were all thrown in to make these portraits memorable.

Towards the end of the shoot, Holly and her husband were walking to a bench for some shots and he picked her up as to have her avoid the mud and wet grass. I was clicking and awww-ing at the same time. I love to capture those in between moments that show relationships and love. To me, the in between staged shots really tell the story of the subject.

The more I shoot and work with couples and families, the more I realize how important it is to have photos done every so often. I’m not saying this as a photographer, I’m saying this as a personal realization to archive your life and family through the years. The most important day of many people’s lives, their wedding, is captured extensively by a photographer, but after that seldom do people get photos together. Personally, I’m going to force my husband (sorry honey) to do some anniversary photos together every year so we can have beautiful photos of us when we’re old and wrinkly and say weren’t we cute!

Columbus Indiana Senior Photography: Jenna

Monday, August 17th, 2009

I’ve had the joy of working with Jenna twice. She’s a gorgeous olive skinned young lady who is going to be someone in the modeling world. She’s tall, willowy, yet athletic as she swims all the time. Her eyes and natural smile are gorgeous! Our first shoot together was in June and we did a Rock/Trash the dress which I’ll be blogging sometime later this month. Our latest shoot was in early August, at my studio setting in Columbus, Indiana. The shoot was to focus on Jenna’s natural beauty and do a model/senior photography type session.

Anyhow, we did three looks with Jenna and started with natural/no makeup and her skin glowed. What a lucky girl! Next look, done by Sidra Luna, a makeup artist in Bloomington, Indiana was a tiny bit of eye liner and it made her already large almond eyes pop even more. We added some wind to get some flow and movement in Jenna’s locks. Our last look was more dramatic, but not over the top. It was a shimmery brown eyeshadow and liner that was flawless (Sidra is good!). We worked through a series of poses that she’s needing as well as some I had up my sleeve.

It was really hard for me to narrow down to the top few photos as there were so many good ones. For some variation I threw in some black and white and cross processing for some extra flair.

Trash the Dress in Columbus & Indianapolis Indiana

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

With the great weather we’ve been having here in Indiana this summer, my trash the dress series have been a breeze. Last week in early August, I met up with gorgeous Brianna, from Indianapolis, for a paint variation on trash the dress. Her hair was a array of colors which perfectly fit the funky shoot we had planned.

She started out painting the dress with the red, green, yellow, and blue paints. After some swirls and dots were painted, she proceeded to dump the paint randomly over the dress. Lola, my chihuahua, decided she wanted to partake and came over to put her paws into the mix. After the dress was thoroughly painted, we painted a stripe on her forehead for added color.

The dress was gorgeous with all the color and this type of shoot is perfect for a bride who wants to add creativity to her wedding album. She doesn’t have to use her dress as there are plenty of options (second hand shops, ebay, etc) to find a dress to be trashed. I’m finding as a wedding photographer, many brides realize their future daughters probably won’t be wanting to wear their dresses so having fun with the gown (or ebay dress)  is a great option.

We ended the session with silly string and I had to dodge strings of green and blue flying everywhere. Brianna was an awesome subject to photograph and I can’t wait to shoot her again sometime soon.

By the way.. I loved this shoot so much I’m using Bri as an ad on the AWESOME RocknRoll Bride Blog where I’ve had two past shoots featured: Strangest D….. GangElegance with a twist… as well as this one: multi-coloured tresses... hope to have more!
