Midwest DIY Brown County State Park Wedding: Pete & Jess

I’ve always wanted an outdoor wedding. We both love camping and hiking and spending time with each other outdoors. We’ve spent a lot of time together in Brown County and felt that it was a beautiful, perfect place for our wedding. We also spent the day after Pete proposed in the park. It just fit.

Pete and I went on our first trip together (camping) in September of 2009. It was a wonderful weekend and picked the fall date because of that trip. Fall is also my favorite season. I love the colors and leaves on the ground…the colors for the wedding were based off of the fall colors.

I used etsy for a lot of the little items in the wedding…the penny in my shoe, the embroidery on the shoes, Pete’s cuff links, my hanger for the dress, spoon bracelets for my girls…. I love having so many handmade items in the wedding. Pete and I spent a few nights cutting and glueing the mustaches for the pictures. We also made the chalk board for the guest table and a chalk board for the photo booth. Craft nights together were so fun!  I also knit a shawl for the wedding and little face clothes for each of my bridesmaids in green. My cousin Amy knit my garter. My cousin Mary  handmade the save-the-dates and the invites as her gift to us. My friend Siobhan made our wedding cake topper (it’s based off a TV show, The Venture Bros, that we watch together).

Pete’s favorite moment he said was seeing me come down the aisle and watching all of our friends and family have such a great time. He loved how well everyone got along and seeing our families come together.

We wanted the decor and colors to go with the setting. My favorite moment of the day was after the ceremony and before taking pictures with Stacy. We were waiting for our party to begin pictures and I think Stacy was changing lenses…anyways, Pete and I had a few minutes with just the two of us. We couldn’t stop smiling and we talked about our favorite moments of the ceremony. It was really nice to have a few quiet moments to share with just him before the night took off.

Our first dance song is “Little Romance” by Ingrid Michaelson.  We picked it because it’s sweet, fun and is upbeat.:)There’s also a line that I love: “I see you’ve styled that hair, there doesn’t seem to be much of it there, you’re in the mood to dance.” It’s always made me think of Pete and smile.

My favorite detail of the day isn’t just one really…I think what made it all so special was the involvement of our friends and family. My grade-school friend, Kim, sang. My high-school friend, Siobhan, made our cake topper. We had 10-15 people together to create the centerpieces. We looked around the ceremony site and the reception and every detail was from someone in our lives. It was so neat!

We honeymooned in Sevierville, TN. We had a cabin there for a week. We had a great time! We went on a helicopter ride, a zip lining tour, and went to the Hatfields v.s. McCoys Diner show. We also went on a hike towards the end of the week that ended with us seeing a bear. He didn’t like us and ended up charging at us. Exciting but scary! The views were beautiful and we laughed the entire trip.

Advice for brides planning: Don’t stress! Everything works out as it should, even if it rains.;)
