Indiana Family Photography: A Family Reunion

Friday, July 16th, 2010

The last couple weekends were pretty busy for me. Two weddings back to back then a family reunion session with over 30 people. The family session could not have been easier. They were extremely easy going, happy, and even the kids were mellow. An added bonus was the short session with the parents of the 7 sibling bunch. It is beautiful and inspiring to see the love they still have for each other.

Starting with some family shots:

Now some outtakes. My trusty husband came along with me and although I sabotaged his camera’s ISO from the dark wedding the night prior, he was still able to snag some fun shots of me taking photos.

I have to give a huge thank you to this group. They made my job easy and were just a great bunch to photograph.

Cupcake and City Lights for an Indianapolis Child Photography Session

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Little Ms. Em is quite the adorable character, so a standard boring child photography session wouldn’t cut it for her. We put our creative hats on and decided to come up with a theme and story to make her session in Indianapolis ultra unique.

We started at a vintage cupcake shop in Indianapolis and Em turned on the charm. Her adorable big blue-green eyes sparkled next to those scrumptious cupcakes. After shooting next to those sugery confections, welet the girl finally divulge then headed onward to the Circle in Indianapolis.

She held out in the frosty cold laughing, smiling, and being a great subject. The buildings lights shimmered behind her creating a truly gorgeous backdrop.

Columbus Indiana Family Photography: Mill Race Park + Zaharakos

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

It was a chilly autumn Sunday morning when I met up with Caroline Callahan to do a very special family session. She is originally from Indiana and went to Indiana University in Bloomington and now resides in New York City working for Seventeen magazine. Caroline wanted to do a photo journalistic style shoot capturing her, her husband, and her grandparents.

To start our session, we met up at Mill Race Park in Columbus, Indiana to shoot with the gorgeous foliage as a backdrop. We set up my vintage couches on top of the hill in the park and I started shooting away.

After our informal family shots at Mill Race, we headed over to the newly renovated old-fashion ice cream parlor Zaharakos. There, they ordered a Chocolate Malt and all took turns sharing which of course I took photos of! Her Grandparents have lived in Columbus for several years and were so great to take photos of. Also, they have been married for over 50 years which makes my heart melt in adoration.

Columbus Indiana Photography: Jessi + Jeremy’s E-Session

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

On a gorgeous Columbus, Indiana fall day with a brisk 60 degrees and crisp air, I met with the fun couple Jessi and Jeremy at Jeremy’s family farm. Driving through the rows of golden dried corn and red leaves, I knew this session was going to be full of fall flavor and color. On the lawn of their farm was these two HUGE red antique tractors that Jeremy’s family is really proud of and rightfully so. They shined apple red in the fall sun!

We started with some family photos (which I’ll post in a future blog to keep things separate) then moved into the e-session. With Jeremy’s tractors both big and small (they had these two TINY tractors for the kids), the textured barn, some pumpkins, fall colored leaves, and Colt’s jersey’s this e-session was so much fun. I can’t wait until their wedding extravaganza next fall!

LOVE!!!!

Columbus Indiana Photography Class: Stacy Able Photography

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Last Monday I had the pleasure of teaching a basic photography class at the Columbus, Indiana Library. There were around 30 people in attendance all with various cameras. I went over the basics of photography and was careful not to go into the dark depths of aperture and shutter numbers. Following my brief power point presentation we went to the courtyard to take some photos and give people the opportunity to ask questions. There were so many great questions and hobbiest photographers there. It felt so great to see the joy I have in taking photos in other people. There was this adorable 12 year old girl who asked me some questions and showed me some of her photos. She has such a great eye! Several people stayed an hour past the end of the talk and kept firing away questions. I left around 8:45 pm (the talk started at 7pm) with a huge smile on my face. It was so nice to share a tiny bit of my photography knowledge with others to help improve their snap shots.

Here is the flier that was posted at the front door… the photos are of Kai, one of my barbet babies from January and Miles an adorable 3 year old boy who dressed up as a petite chef.

Columbus Indiana Family Photography::: Nina’s Family

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Early this summer I had the pleasure of catching up with one of my fellow photographers and friends, Nina Shannon. Nina shoots mostly children in Tennessee and she does a beautiful job at capturing the joy of children. She and I wanted to catch up and shoot together before summer got in full swing, so we met up at her mom’s house for a couple days of hanging out and taking photos. We watched tutorials on edgy lighting techniques then went outside and practiced them. While there, Nina, always behind the camera, asked if I could take some photos of her and her gorgeous daughter Annie. Of course I said yes and captured some cute mom and daughter moments. In addition to those shots, I captured Annie with her grandparents. Being that my grandparents are so special and close with me, I know how special those photos will be in years to come.

Columbus Indiana Photography: Sisters in Mill Race Park

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

I met up with Allyson, Holly, and their husbands at Mill Race Park in Columbus, Indiana to shoot some portraits of them together and with their spouses. They both hadn’t had any photos done of them together since their weddings.

Both Allyson and Holly were a breeze to work with. We started with the standard portrait then moved to variations as that is my specialty. Colorful umbrellas, jumping, vintage couches, and a covered barn were all thrown in to make these portraits memorable.

Towards the end of the shoot, Holly and her husband were walking to a bench for some shots and he picked her up as to have her avoid the mud and wet grass. I was clicking and awww-ing at the same time. I love to capture those in between moments that show relationships and love. To me, the in between staged shots really tell the story of the subject.

The more I shoot and work with couples and families, the more I realize how important it is to have photos done every so often. I’m not saying this as a photographer, I’m saying this as a personal realization to archive your life and family through the years. The most important day of many people’s lives, their wedding, is captured extensively by a photographer, but after that seldom do people get photos together. Personally, I’m going to force my husband (sorry honey) to do some anniversary photos together every year so we can have beautiful photos of us when we’re old and wrinkly and say weren’t we cute!
