Brown County State Park, Indiana DIY Wedding Photography: Bethany & Joe

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Bethany and Joe’s wedding in Nashville, Indiana at the Brown County State Park was a DIY extravaganza. From the home made apple butter, to the plethora of old jars filled with Bloomington’s finiest locally grown flowers, it was a photographer’s dream.

Via the Bride, Bethany: The overall wedding theme was all the good things that Indiana has to offer: beautiful Brown County scenery, locally grown flowers, the vintage Ball jars that made Muncie famous, and the comfort of cornbread, fried biscuits, and apple butter. The wedding palate of pool and canary were inspired by antique aqua Ball jars (also a tribute to Joe’s alma mater Ball State) and the groom’s favorite flower, yellow roses. We wanted our wedding to pay homage to the rustic and natural beauty of the area and have pops of bright color to go with the playfulness of the summer season. Practically every thing in the ceremony and reception was some thing that was handmade, or a vintage heirloom or made us smile. There were also a lot of handmade touches like the apple butter favors my mother made and the oak bough votive holders, cake stand, and table name holders made by my father that made the wedding very personal and special.

First Dance songs?
Impromptu First Dance: Check to Check by Ella Fitzgerald
Planned First Dance: The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson
Bride/Father: Forever Young by Bob Dylan (my dad and I danced around to Bob Dylan songs from my infancy)
Groom/Mother: I Will by The Beatles

Flowers were by Linda Chapman at Harvest Moon Flower Farm. The bridal bouquet was predominantly yellow lilies, spray roses, yellow Armenian basketflowers (also known as globe knapweed), black-eyed susans, bachelor’s buttons, mint and sage. All of the floral arrangements varied in design and in addition to the aforementioned flowers included hydrangea, larkspur, miniature sunflowers, green button mums, yellow and white daisies, dill and a myriad of other locally grown flowers and plants.

Favorite wedding purchase? The handmade paper with yellow flower petal and grass inclusions used to make the pocket folders for the wedding invitations.

Favorite moment? Walking into the reception as man and wife and feeling the love of all our friends and family.

Funniest moment? Seeing Joe’s eyes get really big as a wasp flew into my veil during the ceremony.

Favorite moment? We both agree the ceremony, the actual ‘I do’s', was very exciting and surreal at the same time – it was a moment of ‘wow, we’re finally really doing this!’

Funniest moment? Watching my little nephew James dance all by himself to the Bluegrass Band, he looked like a cross between Elvis and Elaine from Seinfeld doing her ‘ugly dance’, it was so cute!

Why Irwin Gardens? We wanted small, enclosed and intimate.  We accomplished all three by keeping all weekend festivities there at the Inn, also such a romantic and pretty estate.

How did you come up with all your gorgeous details? Inspiration? Magazines!  I clipped pictures for a year of details I liked, and I always knew I wanted Lanterns and couldn’t believe how pretty they turned out.

Date he proposed? May 29, 2009

How did Brian Propose? Brian and I were out with friends when we lived in Boston, we came home later than normal, hadn’t had dinner, and had the cab stop while we picked up a pizza.  Once home I was about to eat my first bite of the much awaited pizza when Brian was in the back of the apt asking for me to come back there.  I remember saying ‘not now I need to eat!’, but he was persistent.  I came down the hallway and he was on one knee with the box in his hand.  It was very quick, I think, well now I know because he told me, he was nervous, so he just blurted out, ‘will you please marry me?’.  We celebrated immediately with pizza.

Honeymoon locations? We took off for 10 nights, starting in Paris, then a brief stop in Amsterdam then to London.  Turns out we’re great travel companions!

Who made your veil? David’s Bridal for something like $25.  Expensive boutiques will try to sell you one for $300, don’t do it.

Seymour Indiana Wedding Photography: Amy + Mike get married

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

What a beautiful late summer wedding Amy and Mike had. Between the forest decorated cake, diy table decorations, the thumb print guest tree, colored straws, and vibrant bouquets this wedding was a joy for me to photograph. I loved all of the memorable photo locations such as the fire tower and the sunset shots in the vineyards of Chateau De Pique. As always, I had a wonderful time working with the couple and their families.

Being these two work in the state parks, it was only appropriate we go to a small park near Brownsburg to climb the fire tower. I love when couples have creative ideas all their own!

Amazing cake made by Mike’s Aunt. The bases, both fathers of the couple cut down stumps and then Amy covered the bases with moss. Very appropriate cake for two foresters.

Rawhide Ranch, Brown County Indiana Wedding Photography: Desiree + Brian

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Desiree and Brian’s DIY wedding at the Raw Hide Ranch in Brown County/Nashville, Indiana was a vintage inspired soiree.  There were so many details I couldn’t stop photographing such as the literary apples, typewriter, clothes pins, flowers, and DIY Martha Stewart ceiling poofs. Desiree and Brian sure know how to throw a celebration and I was honored to be chosen as their photographer.

This 1920s vintage Underwood typewriter was a wedding gift and appropriate as Desiree and Brian are professors. Also many of the guests are poets, fiction writers, or English teachers.

Each apple had a title of the couples favorite novels which also doubled as table card holders. The couple also chose the Raw Hide Ranch in Brown County/Nashville Indiana as they wanted to be in nature, and the ranch as they wanted a place to have fifty of their closest friends and family could spend the weekend together– they wanted the wedding to be more than a day long.

DIY details galore!!! I asked Desiree how she came up with her theme and she said the design scheme was inspired by the dresses and location. She also wanted to include their personalities. Since the dress looked antique and the barn rustic, they couldn’t go with anything too modern so she chose milk glass, antique flowers, and huge paper DIY poofs from Martha Stewart.
