Midwest Engagement Photographer: Jess & Chase (and their dog Juno!)

Q/A’s with Bride to be, Jess, about their midwest engagement session:

To make the save the date signs:Take a plain piece of wood of any size or shape. Choose your base color that you want to show through and paint the entire piece. I used an acrylic paint. Let dry completely. Take Elmer’s All Purpose Glue and cover the paint entirely. I used my finger to spread it out (don’t worry about it being perfectly spread out or even, it adds character). Let sit for about 10-15 seconds (until tacky) and then paint your top coat on top. Let air dry or use hair dryer and you will start to see the cracks come through! The letters are done with a stencil and the same base coat paint. Let dry and there are your signs!!

How’d you two meet? I had heard Chase was a new transfer student for the baseball team and we had seen each other around campus a few times. Many of our friends were mutual and they thought it would be a good idea to set us up on a date. The story goes on from there.

Favorite part of the engagement session? Walking around all the little shops in Nashville and looking at the unique stores and buildings that are tucked away. We loved being able to include Juno in our pictures as she is part of our family.

Wedding plans? The ceremony is at Asbury United Methodist Church on August 18, 2012 with the reception following at Factory 12 event loft. Colors for the wedding are purple and grey and the theme is going to be based around a rustic, cozy, friend and family atmosphere.

Karen & Derricks’s Fall Engagement session in Brown County by Columbus Indiana Photographer Stacy Able

From bride to be, Karen: Derrick and I met when I was on spring break in florida. We talked for a few months and then lost contact. I went back down a year later with some girlfriends and ended up running into him on the beach. We have been together since then and did the long distance thing for awhile.. ITS SO HARD!! So he moved here last January.

He proposed in April in his hometown of Ft. Payne, AL. We were down there for his dads wedding weekend and Derrick proposed to me the morning of his fathers wedding at the state park by a waterfall… I chose the ring.. or we went looking together. he picked out his too!

Wedding plans,, humm lets see.. wedding at St. Bartholomew church, reception at the Loft. A second reception in Florida a few days later so some of Derricks friends/family that can’t back it up here can be part of it as well.. After that JAMACIA!!!!!!

Our favorite moment would probably be the tandem bike.. we got some good laughs out of that and I can only imagine my face when I was trying to steer that thing!!

We choose Stacy Able Photography bacuse we wanted something different.. We loved the different ideas and lighting and situations you put your subjects in. We didn’t want cookie cutter pictures and we felt you were the opposite of that!!! Look forward to working with you again at our wedding!!

Fall Engagement Photos with a Vintage Style Couple: Micah & Ashley

Q & A’s with bride to be Ashley

How did you two meet? We met in high school, we both had a similar group of friends (he was 16, I was 15) but we had always known who each other was (small town).

The proposal? He proposed the weekend of my 22nd birthday. I felt him wake up around 630 ish and was wondering why he was awake. Around 7/730ish he woke me up, kneeling on my side of the bed and after asking turned around and pulled out the ring from his dresser drawer. We have been together for 8 years now and after about 5 we knew we would get married after college.

The ring? A few months before he proposed he took me to a couple of jewelers and had me pick out a few styles I liked. I am kind of old fashioned so I didn’t want anything really big or flashy. I wanted simple but unique. I found the band I loved and I guess his mom had told him she had a diamond for it. So after he proposed with the ring I loved, he told me that the diamond was from his grandma’s wedding ring (which meant a lot to me).

Wedding plans? Our wedding is going to be at a home down in Fort Morgan, Alabama on the bay side. We are getting married out on the sand and having our reception at this big old house. It’s March 31st 2012 and it is very small. There are only 25 guests, which are immediate family and my three best friends from nursing school.

Favorite part of the engagement session? The last location, a cliff/hill at Brown County State Park. The sun was gorgeous and the field was awesome! It was exactly what I had imagined.

Why did you choose Stacy Able Photography? … because her pictures were gorgeous and unique. I could tell she liked natural lighting and simple but classic photos. At the same time her photos didn’t look like a million other photographers. I loved our session and had a blast! I can’t wait to hopefully one day book Stacy again for maternity and family photos! Thanks soo much! Great experience!!

Terre Haute Engagement Session on Rose-Hulman Campus: Denise & Mike

We stopped by Mike’s grandparents home in Terre Haute for a quick photo and delicious grilled cheese sandwich.

How did you both meet? Denise and I met in Calculus class freshman year at Rose Hulman, and we did homework together all year. When didn’t start dating until sophomore year though.

How did Mike propose? I knew that we were both going to be dressed up at my cousin’s wedding in Mobile, Alabama, and I wanted to take the chance to propose where my family could see. I got on one knee and she was very surprised.

Who picked out the ring? I picked it out in secret when she was on vacation with her family. I knew she liked surprises!

Favorite part of the engagement session? Being able to do it at Rose where we met and fell in love, was fantastic, thanks so much for going with us there.

Wedding inspiration (colors, decor, details, etc)? Turquoise and orange, fun and casual laid back atmosphere.

Noblesville Indiana Engagement Photography: Margaret + Jason

I met up with Margaret and Jason before the 2010 holidays and I was so excited to be booked for their fall 2011 wedding in Crown Point, Indiana. They are much fun to chat with not to mention Margaret is a fellow redhead with gorgeous freckles. Their engagement session was in Noblesville as Margaret wanted to incorporate the park’s carousel. Unfortunately the carousel didn’t open until the afternoon, but we still had fun roaming around the park and even getting photos with the trains. I can’t wait until their fall green/ivory wedding– should be lots of fun as there were lots of laughs during their engagement session.

How did you two meet? We met at work; we were competitors on the same route. Pepsi vs. 7up.
How did Jason Propose? He had an elaborate proposal planned out for later in the week involving both our families, a waterfall, and a trip to my favorite restaurant 2 hours away….but I found the ring on 1/11/11 (weird b/c we are doing a 9/10/11 wedding) while looking for P90x dvds for a friend and called him at work and told him about my discovery. So he came home from work with flowers, got down on one knee, and proposed at our apartment.

Midwest Engagement photography: Starkey + Kate in Columbus, Indiana

Memorial day less than 5 days before their wedding, I met up with Kate and Starkey to take engagement photos of them. Last minute they decided for me to shoot an engagement session, which I’m glad they did. Kate being from Columbus, we roamed the park and surrounded downtown Columbus, Indiana spots. I focused on natural light and their love and happiness. These two were super easy to photograph as they are goofy, adorable, and in love. Kate had her wedding makeup trial done for the engagement session by my friend and amazing makeup artist, Kat Sterrett. Although it was a mere 90 degrees, Kate and Starkey had a blast and had me laughing behind the lens.

Engagement Photography Sessions with Dogs!

I try not to dog-geek out clients, but I really love dogs. We have four Barbet (French Water Dogs), a Chihuahua, and a dog that came with the house. So, when a client mentions they have a dog I almost insist we incorporate their furry best friend in their engagement (or family) session. In honor of all the special pooches out there, I’m devoting a best of 2010 blog post to them.

Even a Hedgehog made the cut (I know it’s not a dog but I was very happy to meet Spud the Hedgehog)

Indianapolis Engagement Photographer: Linda + Justin + Marty Mcfly

How did Justin propose? Justin asked me if I wanted to go play tennis, something we like to do in nice weather. When we got to the park and got out of the car, he handed the ball container to me and told me it was my serve. I walked over to one side of the court and opened the container, turning it over in order to dump all the balls out onto the court. Out plopped a couple balls and a little box. I just kind of stared down at it for a second, not really understanding what it was. I think I said “What is this?” When I realized it looked a whole lot like a ring box, I realized what was happening and I think I started jumping up and down. By that time, Justin had come up to me.

How did you two meet? We met in 2004 in Evansville, while attending college. Linda had been working at Hollywood Video for a few months when Justin was hired. We had so much fun working together. We were always flirting and spending our time at work talking instead of getting things done. Soon, however, Justin left Evansville and we lost touch. We both thought about each other a lot and wondered what might have been. In 2007, Justin acquired Linda’s phone number via facebook (a relatively new invention at the time), and called Linda. This began a very close friendship via long-distance telephone lines. The rest is history.

Favorite couple activity? We love to do everything together.

Who picked the ring? Justin picked it, but knew that I did not want just a solitaire. We both love the halo because it’s vintage-looking and seems to fit me much better than a traditional solitaire.

Wedding theme? Colors? Our ceremony is in a building that is very modern; full of windows and modern lines. Our reception, however, is in a hall that has a vintage feel; tall ceilings, chandeliers and columns. I want to try and take the vintage style and incorporate some modern twists. That being said, I’m doing a lot of things DIY which I’m pretty excited/nervous about. I knew my colors almost immediately- Cobalt Blue with accents of Hot Pink. I love the way Cobalt Blue pops in pictures and I think the combination is fresh and cheery for our summer wedding.

Favorite part of E-session? I love love love the Simon Reading Room at the library. It’s so beautiful and I was pretty excited to take pictures amongst all the books.

Newlyweds in New York City: Jenni + John

How did you pick some of your favorite photo spots? Prospect Park: We only live a block from the park and enjoy spending time there together. It has many neat features (the lake, Audubon center, picnic house) similar to Central Park, as they were designed by the same architect. I discovered the “cleft ridge span” (tunnel) about a year ago, while getting lost exploring the park. I loved the unique design and architectural elements and imagine it looks much the same as it did 130 years ago. Brooklyn Bridge: Iconic New York landmark and the gateway to our favorite borough. Grimaldi’s Pizza: Grimaldi’s is touted as the best pizza in New York and the line out the door proves it. (Even though we got lucky and didn’t have to wait.) We always take visitors here who want to experience a slice of NY pizza. Brownstone stoop: I adore brownstones! The brownstone-lined streets are probably the primary reason I fell in love with Park Slope in the first place.Favorite part of session? Near death by crazed bicyclists on the Brooklyn Bridge!

A Martinsville Golf course and Bloomington Horse Ranch Engagement Session: Alyssa + Adam

Another fun engagement session incorporating the couple’s personalities. Adam is a golfer and Alyssa loves horses. Put that together and this e-session is born. I can’t articulate enough how gorgeous the fall has been and how much I love taking photos of couples such as Alyssa and Adam who are in so much love. Stay tuned following their photos for their love story.

How did Adam Propose? He proposed on New Year’s Eve. We went out for dinner and debated whether we wanted to go out to a party or just stay home, the 2 of us. We decided to stay home, in the comfort of our own apartment and cuddled up to eacho ther, the only place I wanted to be to begin the new year. We were laying in bed watching tv when it finally turned midnight. At exactly 12:00am, the first minute of 2010, Adam proposed.

Who picked the ring? Adam picked the ring, and he actually picked it out a month or 2 before he proposed. I don’t wear jewelry, so I told him I would want something small and simple. He picked the perfect ring for me.

Wedding theme colors? The wedding colors are purple (lilac, accented with darker purple).

Wedding date? May 7, 2011

How did you two meet? Adam and I met on September 23, 2009. I had just gotten a promotion to work at the airport for my job, so my schedule changed from Monday-Friday to having different days off during the week. It was the first Thursday I had off in months, so my friend and I wanted to go out to the Vogue like we used to almost every Wednesday in college. Adam, who rarely ever went out, was with his friend who asked him to go to the Vogue that same night. Adam decided to go since he had never been. As I was dancing with friends on the dance floor, I noticed Adam walking on the dance floor. I noticed him looking at me, and also noticed how attractive he was. So, we kind of mutually made our way toward each other and introduced ourselves to each other. We started talking and I asked him what he did. Now, for about a month prior to meeting Adam, I was thinking about joining the air force. Something inside me kept telling I belong with something to do with the air force. When I asked Adam what he did, he mentioned he was in the air force. I got super excited and told him my interests in joining, but suddenly had a peace…like perhaps this was my hint from God. Adam and I talked for a while, but then went our separate ways. About a half hour later, as I was walking back onto the dance floor, I saw Adam again. We locked eyes with each other and he motioned me over to him and said, “Let’s dance.” We danced the whole night…and a year later, here we are! It was lust at first sight…love at 2nd sight!!

A birthday, puggle, and colorful engagement details: Julie + Brian + Ellie

I met with Julie and Brian maybe two weeks ago to chat about their fall 2011 wedding at the Irwin Gardens. When she mentioned her favorite photo of mine (Bosco from Italy) and how she’s followed my work for a long while I was smitten Being their wedding is in October of next year I quickly found a place for them in my hectic fall photo schedule. It was Julie’s birthday the night of our session so Brian got her some colorful cupcakes with the most adorable happy birthday candles. On top of that we had balloons, colorful shoes, Izzie sodas, and beautiful fall light which all made for some beautiful photos you can see below!

I love this one right below– the flair and a touch of color makes for a stunning romantic image, eh?

How did you two meet? Brian and I met freshman year of high school. Throughout high school, we had a lot of mutual friends so we would hang out in a big group. After high school, we went to different colleges (Purdue for Brian, Miami University for me) but started talking more, either online or when I would visit Purdue. Gradually, we would ask each other when the other one would be home for a weekend and plan on both being home at the same time. This went on until senior year of college when we finally realized the reason we made sure to see each other every chance we could must mean that we…. liked each other!

How did Brian propose? Date he proposed? Brian and I love to travel together. The summer of 2009, we visited Portugal and fell in love with it. So September 2010, we went back to our favorite city, Lisbon, for 10 days. The night of September 19th, we went to a bar we liked from our previous visit to listen to fado (traditional Portuguese music). Afterwards, Brian asked if I wanted to walk back to the hotel or take the tram. I was tired so I said the tram. As we were heading down, it stops by a famous view overlooking Lisbon. Brian asked if I wanted to get off to look. I thought “How weird! I just said I didn’t want to walk.” So, we looked for a while, took pictures, walked a bit further. Both of us love taking photos so while I after taking a photo towards my left, I turned around to show Brian and there he was, on one knee with the ring.

Who picked the ring? Brian picked the ring. We never looked at rings together but I must admit that after 5 years of dating, he knew what I wanted from listening to conversations I’d have with friends and also maybe some not-so-subtle hints.

Wedding Colors and theme? We don’t really have colors yet or a theme. We know it won’t be matchy-matchy (I don’t want someone walking in and seeing two colors everywhere). There’s also not really an outright theme but I have always wanted a “Great Gatsby” party for a wedding and I think Irwin Gardens is that whether you plan it or not.

Favorite part of e-session photos? Prior to booking you, we didn’t even want engagement photos really, maybe just one or two for the paper. After the e-session, we both said we really liked how without us even really giving you any suggestions, you came up with ideas (like the cupcakes and Brown County) that really just fit us as a couple. What I don’t normally like about traditional engagement photos is how posed and phony they look but yours turn out so natural, like the couple doesn’t know you’re there (but not in a creepy way…). So, to put in more concisely, our favorite part is how the shoot is tailored to incorporate the couple’s personalities.

A dog, vintage hat, and a summer sunset: Philip + Rachel + Remy

My husband and I met Philip one mid-summers evening as we were walking Cinna, our Barbet (French Water Dog). Philip and Rachel own Remy a water dog mix and he had to know what Cinna was. Well after we chatted dogs a bit we got into photography and they said he would like to get their engagement photos done with Remy. Low and behold a week later we had our session. We had to rush as Rachel was a summer intern at Cummins and the three were heading to grad school in a couple weeks. Philip plays the saxophone so naturally we had to incorporate that, his vintage hat Rachel got him in Austin, Texas, as well as the ever adorable Remy. I LOVE when couples include their pets and hobbies in their sessions. In fact, I strive in each session to bring out their personalities as who wants boring photos when you can have some like these:

Yup Remy is that cute!

Rachel already had Philip’s engagement ring… if you look closely you may be able to figure out it’s code. By far the most intricate and coolest men’s ring I’ve ever seen.

Columbus Indiana Engagement Photography: Sarah + Andrew part II

Here is part II of Sarah + Andrew’s engagement session. We reschedule the sunset photos as the thunder and rain rolled in. Finally a day occurred without a massive thunder/rain/lightening deluge and we were able to wrap up our session.

Sarah and Andrew have two adorable dachshunds. One being a tiny puppy so I had them bring the two along as if you know me I love dogs and have 5 of my own Barbet.

We met at the Mill Race park in Columbus, Indiana right when the sun began to show it’s golden glory.

Sunset engagement photos: Alexandria Virginia

There is something so magical about scheduling your photos around sunrise or sunset. If you are looking for unforgettable photos I would highly recommend scheduling your engagement photos or even wedding photos around those times. The flair, soft hazy glow, and dreamy quality all lead to stunning romantic photos with a touch vintage feel. I can’t gush enough about how crucial light is for a beautiful photo! I’ve been leaning towards more natural light as although I adore messing with high tech flash techniques you just can not replicate a sunset with a flash.

This session in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia is magical because of the light. It began around 5pm and because of it being mid-spring the sun fell behind the old brick buildings casting long warm shadows. I shot this session with Kurstin Roe who has been an amazing friend ever since I met him at the Jose Villa wedding photography workshop in Italy.

I love when couples can lay down their guard and really love each other for their e-sessions… like these two did!

Engagement Session in Washington DC

Yet another DC post! Can you tell I had a great time out there? While there I met up with Kurstin Roe whom I met while at the Italy Workshop last November. He is an amazing photographer and I was lucky to be able to assist him with two of his engagement sessions. The first being at 7am at the National Mall. I have to give him a huge thank you as by getting up at 5am to shoot this was well worth it. The beautiful red/orange glow of the sunrise flickering off the cherry blossoms and monuments was breath taking.

Here are some of the shots I took of Kurstin’s couple. I also put in some scenery photos as those cherry blossoms were glowing!
