Bloomington Indiana Farmers Market: Trash the Dress

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

I knew when I first met Megan she was going to be an awesome client and friend. As she mentioned peacock feathers, a caged veil, and chuck taylors, my mind began racing in photo ideas for her 2011 wedding. You can check out her many ideas on her project wedding website.

I’m wanting to write less on my blog and have my clients talk more so I asked Magen some questions about her Trash the Dress Session. Here are her answers:

Favorite part of the day: Getting to be silly and have fun with Chris.  (Cheesy I know! But with him being 5 hours away every second counts!) Also, getting all dressed up didn’t hurt either.

What trash the dress means to me: Taking an extraordinary moment and placing it into everyday activities.

Advice for other brides: Have a wedding that matches your personalities. Don’t be afraid to get online and look for inspiration from wedding blogs, forums and other brides(i.e. ProjectWedding.com). Most importantly try to strike a happy balance between what will make you happy without breaking the bank. At the end of the day you are just as married if you go to the courthouse than if you have a blowout wedding. (Advice from Chris’s mom)

How Chris proposed:
We had just got back from vacation in Tennessee and  I went outside to let our late dog Tucker out.  Chris came outside after a while and asked me if I wanted some candy.  Well that was a stupid question because I looooove candy! He handed me a Ferrero Rocher chocolate.  After I started to eat it he said, “This was supposed to go in it, but it didn’t fit.” He handed me my ring!! I laughed and said I loved it but this only happens once and he had to ask me the right way, on his knee.  So he got on his knee and asked!! Come to find out he had got my ring while we were on vacation and the everyone knew about it but me. He bought my ring from the same jewelry store his dad had bought his mom’s engagement ring over 20 years ago. I thought that was cool!

Trash the Dress featured on Notable Inspiration Blog!

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I met Kelly out in DC in April at The Garter Girl’s launch party at Vatsu. It was a posh event full of wedding planners, bloggers, photographers, and videographers. The garters were incredibly unique and worth checking out her site to see photos.

Kelly has her own blog, Notable Inspiration which features her inspirational idea boards that if you are planning a wedding are a must see. She has a great eye for coordinating details. We chatted a bit about trash the dress photography and I explained that the title “trash the dress” is really intimidating which does not always involve ruining the dress. Often my trash the dress sessions are more of a day after or fashion shoot for the bride. It’s a great way to get a awesome series of photos in the dress before it gets cleaned and packed away.

One trash the dress session I did with a couple in Loogootee, Indiana was based on the bride’s horses. Erin rode on one of her ponies with her gorgeous wedding gown flowing in the wind. You can see photos on Kelly’s Notable Inspiration blog

Thanks Kelly for the feature!

Indiananapolis Wedding Dress Designer: Btrousseau ROCKS!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Last week I met up with Beth Bennett, my favorite fashion designer in the mid-west, to do a quickie “Rock the Dress” mock bridal shoot. The shoot was less than 30 minutes, but with Steph and that dress it was a breeze to get heaps of beautiful photos. You can see more of Beth’s many creations on etsy as well as online at www.btrousseau.com. If you are a bride wanting something really unique I urge you to contact Beth!

The model, Stephanie, had on Beth’s newest creation. It was a lovely tea length lace applique wedding dress that was vintage like and timeless in it’s own right. I hope to see more of these dresses on brides in the near future.  I can’t forget to mention the caged veil headband and jeweled headband Beth made. Both were extremely well made and delicate in appearance. I want to shoot more of these gorgeous creations Beth!!!

Indiana Trash the Dress: Bride on a Horse

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

The day after Erin’s gorgeous wedding in Loogootee, Indiana she wanted to do a Trash the Dress session with one of her horses. She hoped on her horse with her gown from That Special Touch in Columbus, Indiana and rode around the Indiana fields. Some of the trees had already started to turn that golden fiery fall color which contrasted nicely with the horse and Erin.

Trash the Dress in Columbus & Indianapolis Indiana

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

With the great weather we’ve been having here in Indiana this summer, my trash the dress series have been a breeze. Last week in early August, I met up with gorgeous Brianna, from Indianapolis, for a paint variation on trash the dress. Her hair was a array of colors which perfectly fit the funky shoot we had planned.

She started out painting the dress with the red, green, yellow, and blue paints. After some swirls and dots were painted, she proceeded to dump the paint randomly over the dress. Lola, my chihuahua, decided she wanted to partake and came over to put her paws into the mix. After the dress was thoroughly painted, we painted a stripe on her forehead for added color.

The dress was gorgeous with all the color and this type of shoot is perfect for a bride who wants to add creativity to her wedding album. She doesn’t have to use her dress as there are plenty of options (second hand shops, ebay, etc) to find a dress to be trashed. I’m finding as a wedding photographer, many brides realize their future daughters probably won’t be wanting to wear their dresses so having fun with the gown (or ebay dress)  is a great option.

We ended the session with silly string and I had to dodge strings of green and blue flying everywhere. Brianna was an awesome subject to photograph and I can’t wait to shoot her again sometime soon.

Columbus | Bloomington Indiana Trash the Dress: Brittany

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Brittany and I have been trying to get together to do a trash the dress for around 6 months. Either snow, ice, or scheduling have prevented us from shooting. Finally, in late June we were able to coordinate and get together for a trash the dress/bridal session extraordinaire.

We decided to start with a studio setting to get some dramatic bridal portraits then move to downtown Columbus, Indiana and neighboring areas to get some fashion and themed shots. I believe my favorite shot from this session which was hard to me to chose, was the mock Cinderella photo. Brittany, besides having the longest eyelashes I’ve ever seen, brought these amazing white heels which really completed the Cinderella theme I was going for. It was a whopping 87 degrees outside, and Brittany carted her Disney dress around with a smile and lots of laughs. That dress had to weigh at least 30 pounds!

This shoot  got the wheel of  ideas going in my head and I’m leaning to do some more fairy tale trash the dresses as well as senior portrait sessions with a prom/fashion trash the dress theme. I can’t wait for what’s coming up these next couple of months.

As you can see below, trash the dress doesn’t necessarily mean the wedding dress will be trashed. It’s about celebrating the wedding dress and being able to wear it one more time before it goes into storage.
