Midwest Engagement Photographer: The Creative and vintage E-session

Beth and Joe are an adorable, fun, super smart couple. I could talk with them for hours as conversation is fast paced and interesting. Their engagement session was styled around their interests, how they met, as well as their jobs. We started at the Chihully DNA strand on IUPUI’s campus as Beth is a scientist. Next the two had a picnic styled with vintage sodas, books (Joe is a Librarian), and a beautiful berry pie Beth made which I was fortunate to get a slice later. In between the picnic, their adorable pooches, Eddie and Agnes, joined in on the engagement photo fun. We ended with a stroll around their Broadripple neighborhood as everything was in full bloom. Concluding their photos are some questions I asked Joe and Beth to answer to tell their story. I can not wait until your wedding this summer in Brown County, Indiana!

How we met-Fences and Libraries
Bethany fell in love with charming house with a beautiful library and moved to the Broad Ripple neighborhood of Indianapolis. Joseph first saw Bethany over the back fence while she was mowing the lawn (the first and last time she’ll every use an old school push mower). Bethany was really glad that she had nice neighbors and became friends with Joseph, a librarian. It didn’t take very long for the neighbors to realize that they really liked each other and they started spending more time together.

Do you remember your first date? If so where did you go, what did you do?
Joe and Beth didn’t really have a first date. The closest thing to a first date would be when Joe invited Bethany to go swimming in the neighbor’s pool. While swimming under the stars they both realized that they really, really liked each other. That weekend Joe asked Bethany if they could date. Instead of going out on typical dinner and a movie dates, Beth and Joe spent a lot of time cooking together and taking Agnes, the dog that pointed Bethany out to Joe, on walks around their neighborhood.

How did Joe Propose
The first birthday present Joseph gave Bethany was a handmade book entitled “100 Reasons Why I Want to Be with Bethany. Forever.” A very appropriate gift from a librarian. The lovely card stock and crayon creation even included a very snazzy copyright page complete with volume, Library of Congress cataloging information, and subject headings. Bethany read through the 100 reasons and laughed, smiled and cried a little; then she got to reason 100 “Because I didn’t flinch when I saw how much the ring cost….I would have bankrupted myself.” After receiving the most perfect present she could ever ask for (handmade gifts trump diamonds in Bethany’s book), Bethany agreed to marry Joseph. Several months later when Joseph had his birthday, Bethany gave him a book containing 100 reasons why she wanted to be with him forever and a beautiful tradition was born. Once the couple marry, Joe will organize the little library that Bethany fell in love with in the house that brought them together. There’s no question to what the favorite volumes in the collection will be.

Wedding planning—talk about how you chose your date and location.
We love to take walks and hikes with our dogs, so it seemed appropriate to get married outside. The natural beauty of Brown County made it an obvious choice for a location. Brown County is also one of the treasures of Indiana, which fits into the overall theme of the wedding.

Our fabulous photographer, Stacy Able, was the deciding factor in how we chose our date. No, seriously she was. Scheduling at Brown County State Park was a slight challenge, because the reception site could be reserved a year advance, but the site the couple wanted for the ceremony couldn’t be reserved until January. We reserved our reception site for 3 weekends in June. The minister, Beth’s uncle, wasn’t available on one of the weekends and Stacy was only available one of the remaining weekends. We really liked Stacy when we met her and knew she had shot beautiful pictures in Brown County that we had to have her photograph the wedding. So we set the date without knowing if we would get our ceremony site or not. In the end we were able to schedule the beautiful amphitheater with its sweeping views of Brown County, which just goes to show that everything really does work out in the end.

Tell me a little bit about your wedding inspiration.
All the good things Indiana has to offer are the inspiration for the wedding. The wedding will be comfy and slightly rustic, but will also have pops of bright color to go with the summer season. The wedding colors of pool and canary were inspired by aqua antique Ball jars (Joe went to Ball State University) and Joe’s favorite flower. When Beth found a large piece of hand-blocked fabric that once belonged to her deceased grandmother that had both yellow and aqua in the design, the color scheme seemed meant to be (just like Joe and Beth). The vintage fabric was used as backdrop in the save the date cards and will be incorporated in the wedding favors. The couple is trying to use as many local things as possible (local flowers, classic recipes, games and a laid-back vibe).

Indianapolis Engagement Photographer: Linda + Justin + Marty Mcfly

How did Justin propose? Justin asked me if I wanted to go play tennis, something we like to do in nice weather. When we got to the park and got out of the car, he handed the ball container to me and told me it was my serve. I walked over to one side of the court and opened the container, turning it over in order to dump all the balls out onto the court. Out plopped a couple balls and a little box. I just kind of stared down at it for a second, not really understanding what it was. I think I said “What is this?” When I realized it looked a whole lot like a ring box, I realized what was happening and I think I started jumping up and down. By that time, Justin had come up to me.

How did you two meet? We met in 2004 in Evansville, while attending college. Linda had been working at Hollywood Video for a few months when Justin was hired. We had so much fun working together. We were always flirting and spending our time at work talking instead of getting things done. Soon, however, Justin left Evansville and we lost touch. We both thought about each other a lot and wondered what might have been. In 2007, Justin acquired Linda’s phone number via facebook (a relatively new invention at the time), and called Linda. This began a very close friendship via long-distance telephone lines. The rest is history.

Favorite couple activity? We love to do everything together.

Who picked the ring? Justin picked it, but knew that I did not want just a solitaire. We both love the halo because it’s vintage-looking and seems to fit me much better than a traditional solitaire.

Wedding theme? Colors? Our ceremony is in a building that is very modern; full of windows and modern lines. Our reception, however, is in a hall that has a vintage feel; tall ceilings, chandeliers and columns. I want to try and take the vintage style and incorporate some modern twists. That being said, I’m doing a lot of things DIY which I’m pretty excited/nervous about. I knew my colors almost immediately- Cobalt Blue with accents of Hot Pink. I love the way Cobalt Blue pops in pictures and I think the combination is fresh and cheery for our summer wedding.

Favorite part of E-session? I love love love the Simon Reading Room at the library. It’s so beautiful and I was pretty excited to take pictures amongst all the books.

Butler University Engagement Session: Lindsey + Zach + Malaki

Fun fact– The steps is where Zach proposed and that is the dress Lindsey wore… aw

Zach plays on the Butler basketball team, Lindsey use to play for the Butler woman’s soccer team.

How did Zach propose? Zach took me on a date on October 8, 2010 to a symphony orchestra downtown Indy on the circle and then we ate at the Eagle’s Nest, which was AMAZING! He then took me back to Butler University and placed a blindfold on me. The next thing I knew I was by the fountain on Butler’s campus with Zach kneeling down with a ring while professing his love to me . He set up candles and a table to sit and talk after I of course said YES!

How did you two meet? We met the summer of my sophomore year when I was playing soccer at Butler. He noticed me playing, and then the first day of school I was lost for a class in Jordan Hall when I looked up and saw Zach right at the bottom of the stairs. He yelled hello to me, and my face turned bright red with embarassment. The rest is history.

Favorite couple activity? I would have to say eating. We enjoy good food too much haha. We also love to play sports and compete with one another whether its playing cards, board games, or racing (I’m faster )

Who picked the ring?I let Zach know that I liked princess cut diamonds with a halo, but he made the executive decision! And I LOVE it.

Wedding theme? Colors? Burnt orange/brown….very fall themed colors!! And natural/simple/clean. Nothing too sparkly or girly.

Favorite part of E-session? Playing in Hinkle! Zach and I have spent a lot of time in there and we loved being able to capture it!

Indianapolis Engagement + Pet Photography: Taryn + Kirk

It was early Sunday morning at the downtown Indianapolis canal where Taryn, Kirk, Finley, and I met for their engagement session. The light was perfect and the surrounding area was full of art and color. Finley, the couples cute goldendoodle puppy was wide awake and ready for her photo debut. Luckily I had my husband to woo little Finley as although she deserved lots of spotlight, this session was for her parents.

My husband was so helpful as he held Finley while I photographed her parents.

I’ve been experimenting with Polaroid and 120/220 film. The Polaroid worked!!

Indianapolis, Indiana Photography: Jessica + Michael Engaged!

I knew from Jessica’s first email where she explained she loved peacock feathers and all things funky that we were going to have an awesome session! I love when clients think outside of the box and want something different as that is where I excel.

We met up on one of those early spring days where the sun was bringing warmth and life to Indianapolis. The daffodils were blooming and people were out and about. To begin our session, we started at a antique mall which had millions of possibilities. Streams of sunlight filled the various nooks providing magical natural light. Jessica and Michael played croquet, shopped for books, hats, and records all the while smiling, laughing and of course cuddling for the camera.

Concluding part I, Jessica and Michael dressed up and we headed over to the flying cupcake, my favorite spot in Broad ripple, Indiana for a desert fix. They didn’t disappoint as the lemon and creamsicle cupcakes were great contrast with Jessica’s bright yellow heels. As the sun began to fade we capitalized on the glittering light off the Indianapolis canal’s and concluded our session.

Engagment Photos at Zaharakos in Columbus Indiana

Ever since Zaharakos reopened this past summer in Columbus, Indiana, I have been a frequent visitor. Their antique marble counters, endless array of vintage decorations, and delicious hand made ice cream have rejuvenated the flavor of Columbus, Indiana. I often like to meet clients there to chat over a malt complete with old school paper straws.

Right before Christmas, I met with an adorable couple who are getting married in Brown County in August 2010. While chatting about their upcoming wedding, we found out we have heaps in common. They had both graduated from Clemson in 2005 (I graduated in 2006) we shared a couple friends and great love for Clemson University (GO TIGERS!). What a small world! They now live in Illinois and decided a good mid way point for their wedding is Nashville/Brown County Indiana. I’ll be shooting their wedding and I am teaming with outdoorsy wedding photography ideas.

While at Zaharakos, I couldn’t help but take a couple quick engagement photos for them. Their Zaharakos Special: an ice cream sundae and malt was too cute to pass up on photos. We also shot some photos in the museum side of Zaharakos along with some shots on Washington Street with the Christmas lights glittering as a backdrop.
